This venom contains the following families: CRISP, PLA2 (phospholipase A2), LAAO (L-amino-acid oxidase), C-type lectin (true venom lectin and Snaclec), SVMP (snake venom metalloproteinase), serine protease, BPP (bradykinin potentiating peptide), DC-fragment (disintegrin/cysteine-rich fragment from P-III SVMPs), disintegrin, venom Kunitz-type, cystatin, PDGF/VEGF growth factor.

Miscellaneous B. gabonica produces the largest amounts of venom of all poisonous snakes; yields in excess of 2 grams of dried venom per milking have been recorded.
There are comparatively few recorded cases of human snakebites, due in part to its nocturnal habits and its daytime concealment (Marsh et al., 1997).
